There are two ways to make a contact form in joomla 1.6 and that is the built-in function and the extensions function. Adding contact forms is a great way for visitors to contact you. By using the contact form your email address won’t be displayed for all the spammers to see.
Choosing the right form extension should be done with a balance of features to look for, such as:
- A highly active and focused extension developer,
- A multitude of fields already supported,
- A large user base,
- Development of the extension with long-term focus; if the extension has been created to allow the developer to just create 1 or 2 forms on his/her website, it may not be able to do more in the future (given that their initial need for it was satisfied).
According to Why Joomla . As you can see there is a lot to think about when doing a form in Joomla.
The first consideration is the built-in forms that come with joomla 1.6. The built-in form can be confusing at first but it is free. To decide whether to use the built-in contact form you must know how complicated your form is going to be and how many custom fields you plan to have. If the form is going to be generic and simple, this is a good solution to building a form. Although the ability to provide contact information for your various site editors, administrators, and authors to your site’s visitors is a great resource, it becomes even better when all of that contact information is organized into groups that are easy to manage and navigate. That’s what the Joomla category manager: contacts page is for (from the book Joomla for Dummies). I found the built-in a little confusing working with. I am still trying to learn Joomla and the basics of how to use it. I think when I understand Joomla better this will be a great solution.
The other consideration is a commercial extension like Breezing Forms. Breezing Forms has customer service that you can call or email when you have a problem, but you pay for it. 6 month subscription 3 month support $39, 1 year subscription with 6 month support $69, or the professional subscription with a year support $119
Breezing Forms: the only form builder in the Joomla! sphere with three-form creation interfaces, Quick Mode for the non-programmers, Easy Mode for designers and Classic Mode for programmers and fans of FacileForms.
This is just one of many extensions that are made for Joomla. This one just kept coming up in the extension form reviews as one of the top form builders.
As I learn Joomla, maybe the commercial extension will not look so attractive, but after trying a couple of tutorials and being low on time, the commercial extensions look good right now. On the other hand being a student and not having money, the built ins look good when thinking about money. I personally think it depends on how complicated your form is and what you want it to do. As with anything else the more you know the better decision you can make.
What do you think?
